Donald J. Mayer Jr., of the Point and Shoreland community of Toledo, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo. He was born August 7, 1938, in Tiffin, to Donald J. and Aline A. (Benner) Mayer.

Donald worked for Goodwill Industries and Lott Industries. He was an avid reader, enjoyed playing checkers, and loved Toledo history. He kept track of all things Toledo by creating huge scrapbooks filled with newspaper clippings he collected, and he was always eager to share interesting things about our community. Being residents of Point Place, Donald and his wife Lucy rode their bicycles all over town. He was a member of the Friendship Park Community Center and enjoyed the Point Place car shows. He was a “newspaper boy” as

well. In his leisure, Donald loved to flower garden, attend the casino and visit fire stations. He loved “day trippin’.”

Donald will be remembered for his easy going attitude and for always sneaking in a goofy “dad joke” when you least expected it. He was a deeply caring and loving husband. Donald has touched many lives and his passing is gravely felt by all. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lucy B. (Williams) Mayer, whom he married on April 18, 1970; siblings, Francis Mayer, Juanita “Sue” Maas and Mary Carroll; friends, Nakisha Bell, Hollie Fortman, Amy Annarino and Tracy Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eugene Mayer, and nephew, William Mayer.

Visitation will be Friday, March 15, from 2 to 5:30 p.m., at David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, 5300 North Summit Street, Toledo, with a service to follow at 5:30 p.m.

A special thank you to Regency, Healthcare Revolution, Ohioans, Lucas County Board of DD, St. V’s, Hospice and Friendship Park Community Center.
